Chapter 8

Once the fatality of the virus was identified, and CHIP, the CDC, and the United Nations had confirmed that the virus had indeed stemmed from a Chinese biolab, the president called for a joint meeting of Congress, out of the eyes of the American people. The president would address the nation after he alerted Congress and was able to them in on the progress he and his task force had made thus far. The president called for an emergency meeting with key members of Congress at the White House. The Speaker of the House, majority and minority leader of the Senate, as well as the Supreme Court chief justice were invited into the White House situation room for a top-secret briefing. The president and his task force detail the facts around the pandemic and left out nothing. They supplied documents showing how the virus spreads, the rate of infection, death rate, and global projections. They showed the progress that the task force has made since the early discover of the virus. They shared the quantity in the national stockpiles and what FEMA and other government agencies were doing to assist. He eloquently spoke about the collaboration with other countries, sharing insights and data to help resolve the issue faster.

Crane also spoke in short-term about sanctions that United States and international community should impose on China, but now was the time to focus on human lives. The time to discuss China and appropriate repercussions would be after this pandemic was resolved. All the projections were based on worst-case scenario. Crane thought it was imperative to show worst case and adjust the projections as the data became available. The president also spoke about the importance of social distancing and how effective it was in reducing the numbers in 2020. Next on the agenda was a financial aid package. Crane wanted to ensure that small businesses wouldn’t be ruined, cities and states would be able to pay for essential workers and that Americans would have the financial means to pay their rent and feed their families. That is where he needed help from Congress. He needed them to pass a financial aid bill first. The president and his team wanted to be proactive versus reactive. They were just starting to come out of the global depression that had started in 2020, and Crane did not want to revert backward. President Crane had been methodical with the charge he was leading. He had learned from past mistakes when he was a governor. No one would put their agenda before the needs of the American people. Once everyone was in agreement, the president said he would meet in a joint session of Congress, along with the Supreme Court justices to disclose everything, away from the press.

That night, after the joint session, the president intended to meet with the American people followed by an interview session conducted by George Stephanopoulos. All the cable news networks, including CNN, Fox News, ABC, NBC, and CBS, would be broadcasting.
